Feb. 28th, 2005 01:10 amI'm going to Toronto at the end of March, I was wondering if there are any shops, craft stores, material stores, clothing stores, anything you girls think I should check out while I'm there.
Thanks! I want to make the most of this trip.

Feb. 28th, 2005 09:22 amOk, so this is barely craft related, but I have to share! I start work at Joann's tomorrow, and I'm so excited! Work = money = crafts = work! It's a wonderful cycle!
Alright, that's all!

Feb. 28th, 2005 09:49 ama couple crafty related questions:
has anyone here used celluclay? i'm big into papier mache and i'd like to try this out for more non-geometric sculpture elements.
what are some good resources on (picture) frames? i know it's not a very crafty question, but i recently spent a fortune (the equivilent to a fortune for a student) on low priced yet crappy frames for an art show. i know of several places (just stores in general) that sell nice plane frames for cheap, but they don't come any bigger than 8x10 (give or take). i don't suppose anyone knows of a good resource for low cost frames... or better yet, how an average jane like myself could make them.
thanks for any info.

over the weekend i decided to check out a cool bead shop near my apartment, and it just so happened they were having a 50% off sale! it was majorly crowded, but I managed to get the ingredients to make these:
( earrings )
and also, I decided to knit myself a "spring scarf", for those days when i dont want to wear a coat, but its a bit chilly out...its going to be really really long, and its actually really skinny, only 7 loops on the needle

no, it's not too close to any trains, it's a bit of a walk actually but there are plenty of buses running up and down Northern Blvd. one of 'em has to stop by there.
other than that, the bead selection is extensive but the store kinda, i dunno, disappointed me. maybe b/c it was my first time in a michael's. oh well.

Ok, I'd like to make this purse, but the person who made it used clear tape over the cards, and duct tape inside. My question, and I've wondered this about all purses, wallets, etc made from tapes of any kind - like all the awesome duct tape ones that are made from different colors and such - is doesn't the tape eventually start to peel off/get dirty?
I made the outside of the bag with clear contact paper so as to reduce this risk, but I'm at a loss as to how to finish it so that there are no raw edges of tape/contact paper that could get dirty/peel. I've thought about lining the inside with some cute fabric, but again...what to do with the raw edges of the fabric? The best solution I can think of is to take some binding or bias tape and go around the outside edges...but I think I would probably have to glue it instead of sewing...which brings me back to the peeling/dirty question again.
Is this even a problem in bags you guys have made? Am I just being overly paranoid?

Hello ladies. I'm a mediocre sewer and I've been making more and more clothing/bags/etc. One thing I've never done, however, is knit. I would love to learn, but I'd need a very easy to follow tutorial. Does anyone know of any good ones? Preferably with pictures?

Wrap Skirt
Feb. 28th, 2005 02:25 pmHi all! I need a little help. I tried to make a pair of those wonderfully comfy looking wrap pants a while back, and failed miserably. I'm not sure where I went wrong, but it was most likely in measuring.
Now, however, I have fallen in love with This Skirt. Kudos to Funky Utopia, because they also worked with Crafters for Critters and I think that's swell.
Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy a skirt from them (yet - I may treat m'self when my tax return comes in.) And well, I'd like to try my hand at it (And the local Joann's is moving, and has everything 40-60% off). Now, I've had 'wrap skirts' before that were essentially a big square of fabric with a chord at one side, and a hole on the other (kinda). But Funky Utopia's skirt doesn't quite look like that. Do you think it'd be safe for me to cut two squares with my waist size, stitch them into a tube, and sew on ties/ribbons and get a similar result?
I figure the biggest it should be is that the two 'corners' of the front panel meet in the back, and tie. So that should be my entire waist size, or a little smaller. Does that jive?
In any case, I'll try it and post results later. *G*

hiya ladies and gents
Feb. 28th, 2005 02:47 pmi'm not usually the sort to ask for inspiration in such a direct nature, but i've had this immaculate, white denim levis jacket for a very long time and i want to do something with it. i usually wear a leather, but this jacket is calling to me. a blank canvas. the down side? it was originally purchased by a really big door man. so even though i've a rather sturdy frame, it is still huge on me.
my sewing machine doesn't work, but i'm open to hand sewing. i'd like to alter it as little as possible to make it look good, and i fear that change must come in the sleeves, which is a place i've never tread.
as far as painting it, stenciling it, whatever, i may cover it with buttons/pins, i may cover it will doll parts. it is just the sizing thing i need. if you've seen any sort of hip long coat (because it will be long no matter what alterations i do, i love the length), please drop a link in here. thanks ever so.

Scrap book idea
Feb. 28th, 2005 02:53 pmI just finished moving from (practically!) one coast to the other. The first few places we stopped had very lame post cards. The whole first day of travel was "wasted" as far as finding interesting cards to mail back to friends I'd left. On the second day, we stopped at this great place in South Dakota, "Al's Oasis". They had =tons= of great cards, and I thought it would be fun to collect great images of neat places to go and beautiful scenic images of the various (remaining states) I was passing through.
Now I have many cards to organize, and a few scetches I wish to add of things I actually saw. My camera was packed out of reach by others, so no photos of my own to add, sadly. Lots of notes to add about things I saw or thought, and if I make copies of it, I can send a few copies to friends to share my trip with them.

Feb. 28th, 2005 02:57 pmDoes anyone know what kind of fabric is used on this top, for the stretchy piece?
http://www.delias.com/item.do?categoryID=649&itemID=44111
The part with the rainbow lines on it?
I've seen it on a lot of those tunic-type tube tops, but wasn't sure if it was a material, or something I would have to sew myself.
Thanks for any help :)

I'm not sure this is an appropriate or inappropriate question, but I'll ask and hope for some good feedback.
I have heart and lung disease that are preventing me from having a job, so I want to make money from home. The problem is that if I make more than 1000 a month I'll lose my SSI(disability income) and health insurance. So I'd have to find something that was a really good way to make some solid income so I could pay for my own health insurance or find something that was fun and pulled in OK cash.
I was just hoping for a few suggestions. I mean, it's OK for me to sell some things online, like rag dolls, etc. I guess I more want an idea of what sort of things pull in how much cash. :) Please lemme what you sell even if it's good or bad income, if you're willing to share it without promoting your site which i believe isn't allowed.
Thankyou everyone. I just really wanna find something I can do so I don't have to leach off of the government, or at least make some extra cash for things I need like clothes, food, etc etc.

Feb. 28th, 2005 04:05 pmThey had the cutest little spring hobo bags, and they wanted nearly $10 for one. So I came home and made one with the help of the tutorial from craftster. A couple of hours and a handful of swatches from Javis Davis and BAM! I have a hobo bag!

Feb. 28th, 2005 04:12 pmSorry for posting another blah question, but I thought you all might know... does anyone know of any good press coverage on independent fashion/clothing/crafty designers, specifically on how they've used the internet as a means to promote their products? I'm thinking magazine articles, news bits, blog pieces, pretty much anything. Thanks :)

Feb. 28th, 2005 04:47 pmI've wracked the memories of several communities, and I simply can't find this anywhere. Does anybody have the tutorial for making undies/boxers out of t-shirts? I can't find it ANYWHERE.
And just so this isn't only a memory-related question, I have another question that may yield more responses (I hope). I made a denim skirt out of an old pair of jeans a while ago, but now they're really old and the waist doesn't fit..it comes up much too high. What's the best way of fixing this? Should I just cut the waistband off? If so, how do I deal with the zipper/button contraption?

Earrings for the Non-Peirced.
Feb. 28th, 2005 05:17 pmI'm scarred as hell to get my ears peirced, but I need a pair of radish earrings for my Luna Lovegood cosplay coming up soon. I've looking through the memories and my local craft stores, and seen nothing to use for clip-on earings. Any suggestions? The radishes are going to be made of either Fimo or Premo, so they might be a bit weighty.

Feb. 28th, 2005 05:26 pmMy roommate and our friend Amy were in a car accident on Thursday (they were rear ended in the snow) They're alright, it could have been WAY WORSE and I'm thanking every higher power I can think of that it wasn't... they're mostly banged up but Amy (the driver) needed 18 stitches in her eyelid so I bought her some felt and elastic and made her some fun eye patches to cover her bruises and stitches for a few days....
I forgot to take pictures of those (oops!)
but with the left over felt, I made a cupcake while I watched OPRAH today!

Feb. 28th, 2005 06:29 pmHey ladies (and crafty men)-
I sew alot, and belong to sew hip, but I was wondering if anyone belongs to a costuming community, and if they could pass along the name?
I don't want to junk up the community with pictures of the latest thing I made alot of the time because it's mostly costumes, not cool crafty thingies, and most of you would be like:
:wtf, mate? It looks like my grandmum's muumuu?:
Thanks!
Abbybob,
who managedto sew up an entire 15 yard bolt of fabric today!

Feb. 28th, 2005 08:13 pmso a note on rubber cement-
it really really sucks
a few years ago I decided I wanted to put tracing paper over my windows (they are all sectioned off... like the window I did it to has 24 panes, 12 of which are regular glas, the other 12 are textured) so they would look japaneseish.
and I used rubber cememnt for this
bad idea
about six months later I tried to get it off with a razor blade and only had moderate luck and it was producing this really scary powder that I assumed to be toxic.
never fully got htem off.
and now Im trying again (even though I kinda like the shape that looks like alaska...)
and it sucks.
rubber cement sucks.
and I just had to tell everyone.
edited to add:
I am not looking for suggestions as to what to try to get this off (my options are a) water and scraping or b)heavy duty solvents like acetone or lacquer thinner)
nor am I looking for suggestions as to what to do better next time (because I will NOT be doing this again! ahh!) this is just meant as a warning that if you leave rubber cement in the sun, or use it as a long term adhesive, it loses the ability to peel off. thats why I used it in the first place. instead of peeling off and balling up, it turned into a powder.
the end.

The sewing monkey that lives within me
Feb. 28th, 2005 10:27 pmToday was my day off-
After procuring a spool of black thread, I set to using a 15 yard bolt of black polyester linen look fabric, courtesy of Wal*mart's $1/yard table.
Here is what I made:
Jedi/Hobbit/traveler robe: http://snipurl.com/d4mj (this took most of the bolt, it was pretty easy to make, and I lapped the hood seam, so there are no raw edges when the hood is done. Ditto on the neck)
Black Norman Tunic: http://snipurl.com/d4ml ( I trimmed it to match the dress it is layered with it, which I made just a couple days ago).
Long sleeved black tunic: http://snipurl.com/d4mo, I used reversible trim on the the hem and sleeves. THe sleeves and have 2 rows of trim, one row the "right" way, and the second row the "reversed"way.
And out of the scraps, came a tiny short capelet: http://snipurl.com/d4mm, It has a tall collar that is folded over in the picture, and closes with a button and loop. Far too small for me (I have man shoulders), but I have some petite, narrow shouldered friends it might fit.
And I finished it all in a span of about 5 hours, the robe taking the longest.
http://snipurl.com/d4ms is a collection of some of the stuff I've made over the past 5 years, 99.9% of it is renaissance or medieval styled clothing, some is fantasy. It is not a complete collection, but it's a majority.

Sorry about the bad quality ;)

Mini-present ideas?
Feb. 28th, 2005 11:27 pmMy friend is coming to visit me soon, and I haven't seen her in months (and won't for see her again for another year), so I wanted to make her some mini-gifts. I've looked through memories and a lot of the most recent posts, and I have found a lot that I like, but I thought I'd ask for more suggestions.
I'm not *great* at crafting, but I am decent. I have access to pretty much any inexpensive craft supplies and I own a sewing machine.
I was also considering throwing her a really, really late birthday party, if that helps anyone come up with more suggestions. The only things I'm actually planning to make right now are a mini-scrapbook and possibly a purse/bag to have all this stored in when I give it to her.
(Also, when I say "mini" I don't necessarily mean small, just nothing too over the top...that might be beyond my skill level at the moment.)
So...any suggestions would be helpful:)
Thanks!
