Outdoor Art / Sacred Spaces
Aug. 15th, 2003 01:30 amInspired by a ( post ) I made in
alucinortela a little while back, I decided to revisit this project of mine and share it with everyone. Gardening and landscaping in itself is an artform of sorts, though different from the typical sewing or tin making projects we normally see here. Variety is good!

Bookshelf "doors" help needed
Aug. 15th, 2003 07:50 amI need some ideas.
I have this book shelf from when I was a kid that's probably about 3-4 feet tall, wooden, and just wide enough to fit vhs and dvds, since that's what I use it for. I really, really am tired of seeing my videos and wanted to cover the front. I do not want to use fabric. My first idea was to use quarter inch plywood, paint and hinge it to the front to make doors. I was going to drill two vertical holes handle height and knot two loops, one on each door, of twine or thin rope, then slide a pair of decorative chopsticks through the twine as a way to secure the doors. Maybe stencil a dragon on the front of each door or something.
Well after talking to my dad, he informed me it wouldn't work because that thinness of plywood warps with humidity and time. So that won't work. And the next thickness will be too thick and too heavy for that bookshelf.
So what I was wondering is if anyone has any ideas for material or an item I can use in the same manner for doors that is neither thin plywood or heavy wood.
Any help would be appreciated!

those darn machines!!
Aug. 15th, 2003 09:28 ami just joined the other day. i have a question about my sewing machine. its probably from the 70s or 80s (its my moms actually) ive been using it recently until it decided to become retarded on me. everytime i start to sew (mostly just sewing cotton shirts) it only puts in like 4 stitches and looks all messed up. i checked my stitches setting and it was on a regular stitch so that wouldnt be the answere. then i checked to see if it was threaded right and it was. does anybody know what im talking about? and if so, what is wrong? and another thing...i need friends for my lj...be my friend

Aug. 15th, 2003 10:24 amegg shells? [15 Aug 2003|10:19am]
hello :)
i was watching HGTV, and the woman used a plain craft box, painted it, then put on a good amount of normal white glue on top of the paint.
she then had egg shells, soaked them in hot water to remove the membrane, and placed them on top of the box. using a craft stick, she broke the egg shells to make a mosaic on the box. then when it was all covered, she painted over the shells, adding water to the paint to make it lighter. THEN she used this shimmery stuff used for crafts. it looked solid, and you put it on with your fingers.
now, i was wondering, has anyone ever tried this?? i plan on going to the store this weekend and buying a small box and such. but i was wondering if anyone had any tips on this?
also, does anyone know the shimmery stuff i'm talking about? she said it comes in many shades. and you apply it with your fingertips.
thanks =)

Denim and Bedsheet Tote Bag
Aug. 15th, 2003 10:30 amHi, this is my first post to craftgrrl. Thanks Kimmercake for the lj code. Let's see if I can get this lj cut thing right. Sorry ahead of time if I mess it up.
I made a tote out of a pair of jeans that were too big on me and I made the lining out of a sheet that my Mum had in her linen closet for so long that it developed those fade/yellow lines.

Aug. 15th, 2003 10:51 amso, i'm trying really hard to be crafty and clever, and i'm working on a lamp. it's just a plain glass base with all the electrics already in it, and i'm mosaicing (is that even a word?) it with you know, broken glass. now, for the lamp shade, i have this old spherical paper lantern that i want to use, because the inside (the metal part that holds the lantern open and in which you place the lightbulb) is broken. so my quetion is, how to a put the lantern on the lamp? the lamp already has a fixture for the lightbulb to go into, but i don't want to just rest the lantern on top of this, as it will not stay in a nice open round looking way, and will probably touch the lightbulb (yesss, fire hazard!) any ideas for how to fashion something to sort of hold it up?
sorry, this is a bit confusing...

i want to make stencils out of this and this to spray onto either side of my bookcase. for those of you who don't recognize the images, they're logos of the band sigur rós. here are thumbnails:

i'm not very experienced in stenciling and these will be the most detailed stencils i will make thus far. i haven't really figured out how i should cut these out or how to modify them so that they will work. since it is obvious that if i just cut out the outline, i won't get all the detail on the inside. can somebody help me out? or if you have the free time, could you modify the images for me so that they will be "stencillable"? thank you!!

Strapless t-shirt reconstruction?
Aug. 15th, 2003 11:58 amI was camping this week, and got really bad sunburn on my shoulders while out on the boat and swimming. (And I even put sunscreen on multiple times!)
So right now my skin screams at me every time I move because of tshirts and even tank tops. Bras are out of the question.
So my request to you... how would I go about reconstructing a tshirt to be strapless? Or just making a strapless top with fabric. I'm desperate. Could I just do it with ribbon to tie it tight? Anyone have pictures I could see?
My skin thanks you :o)

wedding bells
Aug. 15th, 2003 03:35 pma decision hasn't been made about what to give as favors for my girlfriend's upcoming wedding yet...but in the meantime, i thought i'd share my latest wedding craft with anyone who needs it!
THIS placecard holder seems to be very common amongst the plethora of e-wedding stores, and pricey as well. My girlfriend purchased THESE and inspired with the above idea, i removed the card from the loop and slipped on a silver SPLITRING/KEY RING. The ring fits perfectly and is sturdy enough to hold a placecard! As for the original card with the poetic bell ringing instructions, we figured we could just print it on the back of each placecard, or on a slightly taller card and place it behind the name card!

Precious Metal Clay?
Aug. 15th, 2003 03:43 pmHi Everyone,
Have any of you used Precious Metal Clay? My parents have bought me a starter kit for my birthday and I was wondering if any of you have used it and any dos and don'ts you may have.
Thanks
Nicola

Polymer clays
Aug. 15th, 2003 04:07 pmOk. I know nothing about Sculpey/Fimo kinda clays... but I think I'd like to try to make some pins/badges for a party I'm having. I've always wanted to play with it and this seems like as good a reason as any.
Does anyone know:
1. Once I've made something, can I glue it to something else? How well will it stay?
2. Can I write on it once it's baked with a paint pen or a sharpie? Like to personalize it?
3. I will probably be making small flags... is there a trick to making sure the different layers stick together and don't fall apart after it's hardened?
4. How hard is it to work with? Is this a reasonable "beginner's" project?
I appeal to the collective... :o)

Iron ons or something of the like
Aug. 15th, 2003 04:28 pmI have a jpg of an image I want desperately to put onto a canvas bag of some sort to use as my knitting bag. This is something I simply have no idea how to do reliably though I'm sure its boring old territory for most of you. I know that some iron on transfer things don't stay or something. Or maybe I am wrong. Even so I don't even know what kind of paper I am looking for to print the image out on, or for that matter where to buy such a thing. Or if I should try and go to a copy shop for a better color print. I don't actually have a printer but I can use somone elses. I am in the Boston area if that matters for shopping locales. Any help is appreciated. I am more of a frustrated crafter but I have been inspired by the ingenuity of the people since I started watching the group. I kind of think creative but not so much on the follow through. Time to change that I hope so offer me suggestions and like wish me luck. Thanks!!
I'm new to the community, and I thought I would just say "hi". :)

Aug. 15th, 2003 07:01 pmi know this is more home interior than crafty, but i figure you gals know a good thing when you see it and i need me some advice. i have a bathroom that has all pink ceramic (think retro) i think its pretty neat, and im getting a chance to re-decorate the room. like i said the sinks and bathtub and toilet are pink and the floor tiling is pink (different shades there). i need a paint color for the wall or all together theme. ive been thinking about going like retro hair salon or something. anyways, any advice would be nice.
So, it's August and I am now beginning work on Christmas gifts. For this year, I thought it would be fun to make Sock Dogs. I found the instructions last Christmas in Martha Stewart's Kids magazine. I made a few last winter. They're so much fun and they're so easy. Definitely inexpensive as well (which is why they're going to be great to make for christmas).
Anyway, if any of you are interested you can look at the instructions Here. More information about how to make specific dogs (like bulldogs, scotties, etc) can be found here.
When my digital camera gets fixed I will take pictures of the dogs I've made before.

Aug. 15th, 2003 09:49 pmdoes anyone have any ideas what to do with dead xmas lights?
all i can think of is taking them out of the sockets, cutting the small wires off and using them whole as a mosiac.
after that, i draw a blank.
thanks in advance.

Wanted: fabric
Aug. 15th, 2003 10:06 pmMy best friend graduates college in December. I am going to make her a quilt. It's going to be a very scrappy quilt. And there's going to be main themes -- stars/moons, bees/ladybugs/dragonflies, fleur de lis, cats, shoes/purses/shopping/girlie stuff, drinking/martini glasses/ retro. I have no preference about colors.
So what I want from you guys is a trade. I'm thinking I'm going to use 2 1/2 inch squares -- at least 144 for the smaller size quilt I'm looking at doing.
If you have fabric -- 2 1/2" by 2 1/2" of 3" by 3" -- please send it to me. And I will send you something in return -- fabric, stickers, mix cds, anything else we can come up with.
Leave a comment or email me (hfa@livejournal.com) for address.
Thanks you guys. You're the best.

Aug. 15th, 2003 10:19 pmDoes anyone know of a way to make bath bombs/bath fizzes lather? As fun as it is the color the water, it just isn't quite as fulfilling as having big bubbles everywhere. I suppose I could just put liquid soap in, but the scent of that interferes with the scent of the bomb.
So yeah - anyone know how?

Making furniture
Aug. 15th, 2003 10:54 pmOkay, here's the thing: I'm moving in a few weeks, and I need an armchair/chaise for my bedroom because I'm too snooty to just lounge on my bed and too nice to make my guests sit on the floor. ;)
Anybody have any input? Anybody else ever just thrown some stuff together and BOOM it was a chair? ANYTHING would be helpful. I'm not a carpenter, I have no power tools (but I could probably borrow some if need be), and I have a short attention span, so I don't really want to try anything that's going to take weeks to do. I'm thinking about starting with just a plain premade wood tabletop and upholstering it with some 8" foam and fun fabric, but I'm kind of at a loss for legs and arms/back.
Thanks, lovelies! :)
